Makkah and Madinah

About Makkah and Madinah

Makkah and Madinah are the two holy cities of Islam, in the west of Saudi Arabia. Pilgrims on Umrah usually fly to Jeddah (JED) for Makkah or to Madinah (MED) directly. Hajj for residents of the UK and the EU is booked only through the official Saudi platform Nusuk Hajj; Abbasi Travels does not sell Hajj packages or Hajj visas.

Best time to travel

Most guides describe the winter months, December to February, as the most comfortable for Umrah, and October to November as good as well. From about May to September it is very hot, with daytime highs above 40 degrees Celsius, which is hard for older pilgrims and small children. Ramadan is a time of great meaning and also the most crowded. In the weeks around Hajj, Makkah is not open to other visitors. Figures differ between sources, so treat them as a rough guide.
